In recent years it has become popular to see and hear reference in nutritional and medical circles of the tremendous benefits of Antioxidants.  By definition: 1. An antioxidant is a substance that inhibits oxidation.  2. An enzyme or other organic substance, such as vitamin E or beta carotene, capable of counteracting the damaging effects of oxidation in animal tissues (Webster’s College Dictionary).

Of particular interest when discussing antioxidants is the term free radicals.  A free radical is an extremely active molecule lacking an electron in its outer shell.  An example would be super oxide hydroxide or peroxide.  These free radicals are capable of rapid oxidation of tissues, especially fats, which results in excess rancidity, tissue damage and premature aging if not controlled.  Free radicals are known to cause over 60 major diseases as a result of the damage they do to the cell lining, making it easier for disease to set in.  While free radicals play an extremely important role in the body, especially to the immune system, it is crucial that they be controlled by the counteracting activity of antioxidants.

We have long been aware of the benefits of antioxidants such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium.  But it took over 20 years of rigorous scientific research by Dr. Jacques  Masquelier of France, to bring our attention to the benefits of an exceptionally aggressive class of antioxidants called proanthocyanidins to which rutin, bioflavonoids and tannins also belong.  Dr. Masquelier’s research shows that the most active members of this class are the ones he referred to as pycnogenol.

Pycnogenol, now a registered trade mark in America and Canada, was used by Dr. Masquelier as a generic term, referring to proanthocyanidins from any source, including grape seed and pine bark.  Most of Dr. Masquelier’s research was done with grape seed extract and he has shown that grape seed has a greater antioxidant effect than pine bark.  Pine bark is more expensive to produce and extract than grape seed.  The higher cost is not because pine bark has a greater value as an antioxidant.  This does not however take away from the performance of pine bark as an effective free radical scavenger.

It is important to note that unlike vitamin C and E which carry out their antioxidant duties in a more passive manner, the OPC’s utilized by MicroTech are more aggressive in their free radical scavenging.  They actively seek out and neutralize free radicals before they can cause harm.

In clinical observations using Live Cell Phase Contrast Microscopy, OPC’s assistance in the return to normalcy of free radical damaged red blood cells has been achieved within a relatively short period of time.  This observation has been repeatedly demonstrated by health care professionals all over North America.  While other antioxidant formulas contain mainly Vitamins A, C, and E, Dr. Masquelier’s diligent research has proven the ultra powerful free radical scavenging antioxidant effects of OPC’s.

They are in a class by themselves as the most potent free radical fighters known to man.  They are major protectors of collagen, the basic foundation of our blood vessels and all connective tissue; such as skin, as well as the ligaments around joints and tendons. They are as much as 50 times more potent than vitamin E and 20 times more potent than vitamin C.  When combined with a balanced enzyme formulation such a MicroTech’s Total Health Formula, the result is a complete maintenance approach.  This approach assures effective free radical scavenging and efficient tissue detoxification.  Each capsule contains 150 mg of OPC, the most potent formulation in the market place.

OPC’s affix themselves to both the inside and the outside of cell membranes.  Specifically connecting themselves to the cells of blood vessels and connective tissues, they stand as vanguards to better health in a world of deteriorating ozone levels, and the threat of ever increasing chemical and electromagnetic pollution.

Usage
OPC’s assist in the reduction of inflammation in a variety of cases.  Some examples of this are:  Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, and other inflammatory illnesses.  OPC’s reduce Allergy susceptibility and symptoms, reduces premature aging and other degenerative processes, as well as increasing immune activity.  OPC’s significantly inhibit and even kill human cancer cells, while increasing the growth and viability of normal healthy cells.  OPC’s help the integrity of blood vessel walls and are therefore useful in cases of retinopathy, varicose veins, slow healing injuries, pre and post surgeries.  They also reduce the damage to red blood cells and healthy tissue during chemo and radiation treatments.  An OPC should be recommended along with a patient’s medical prescription in order to expedite the healing process and promote general health.

Grape Seed Extract, Milk Thistle, Bilberry Leaf Powder, COQ10, Geletain (capsules).

As a preventive, most people will do well on 1mg of OPC per pound of body weight, or one to two capsules per day.  If an active degenerative condition exists or chronic fatigue, the dosage should be doubled for the first 60 to 90 days.
